Rin - A Literary Journey

Rin awoke to the sunrise through the windows in front of his bed. He was quite warm thanks to the thick blankets, but the stove had since been extinguished and his nose, the only thing not covered, was quite cold.

Getting out of bed, Rin admired his quarters in a new light. The window was composed of long, tall panes put together to create one large panoramic view. Each pane was outlined in brass. Due to this design the room was quite cold, and he could feel the air seeping in along the junctions of the panes when he placed his hand on them.

The walls of the room were a dusty lilac and had mirrors of various shapes and sizes hung about like artwork. They made the room feel even bigger. Rin pulled out his cloak and other clothing from the closet and got dressed. Today was the day he could finally enter the library. He wasn’t sure what they would find but prayed it would be helpful.

Making his way into the main room Rin was reunited with the other sorceresses who had prepared a traditional Winter Kingdom breakfast which consisted of winter berry tea, steamed vegetables mixed with mushrooms from the mountains, and eggs with bread.

“Rin, good morning. Please join us to eat. You have a long day ahead of you in the library and will need the strength,” said Vanslen.

After breakfast Vanslen lead Rin to a different part of the high council’s lair. They walked through a breezeway that connected two different parts of the mountain peak. Rin glanced over the edge down into the misty abyss as they crossed. On the opposite side was the library.

“Here we are, all the lore from since the Winter Kingdom began,” boasted Vanslen.

Past a heavy wooden door secured by a lock and skeleton key was a vast library that occupied an entire cavern inside the mountain. There were a few small windows, but the space was mostly illuminated by blue glowing mushrooms and strange luminescent pink vines with glittering flowers that draped overhead.

The books, which were mostly large volumes with tattered yellowing pages, sat stacked on bookshelves that reached up to the ceiling. Some shelves even had rolling ladders to reach the upper levels. One strange thing Rin noticed right away was that unlike the palace library which smelled a bit like musty paper, this collection didn’t smell musty at all. The dry mountain air must have preserved the books well over time, that or magic.

“Where do we even start?” asked Rin, gazing at the vast stacks of books.

“There is a section for the royalty,” said Vanslen, guiding them through the library.

When arriving at the set of bookcases dedicated to royalty Rin was again shocked to find that none of them were labeled. All of the books were a sort of dusty gray color with gold embellishments on the spine, but not a word to denote what was in each volume.

“Is there some kind of catalogue or key to find the topics of these books?” Rin asked.
